The Bar Test

Updated: Jan 18

Let me set this up properly.

Imagine you walk into a bar. You see an attractive human being. You gather the courage to talk to them.

So far, so good.

Then the overthinking starts.

What if they think I’m a creep?

What if I say the wrong thing?

What if I embarrass myself in public?

That spiral right there? That’s exactly what happens when most people write.

Here’s the Truth No One Tells You About Writing

I’m about to prove to you — in just a few minutes — that a lot of what you’ve been told about writing is a lie.

Good feedback isn’t enough. A “banger” website isn’t enough. A perfect outreach script isn’t enough.

You know what actually makes it work?

The bar test.

What Is the Bar Test?

I could give you a textbook definition. But that would defeat the entire point.

So let me explain it as a friend would.

If your writing wouldn’t sound normal coming out of your mouth in a real conversation, it’s bad writing.

That’s the bar test.

Back to the Bar

It’s Saturday. Work’s done. You’re out with your friends. Drinks in hand.

Then trouble walks in.

Your friends hate you, so they force you to go talk to her.

You take a shot.

Feel the burn.

Start walking.

Your heart is thundering. Your palms are sweaty.

And then you open your mouth.

“I think you’re the most wonderful creature to ever walk this earth. I’m free on Monday. Let’s get married.”

That’s not confidence.

That’s terrifying.

It sounds like an alien hijacked your body.

Now Compare That to This

“Hey, I think you’re pretty. Can I buy you a drink? If not, no worries.”

See the difference?

One sounds human.

The other sounds desperate, scripted, and unhinged.

This is where most business owners completely mess up their writing.

Why Most Business Writing Fails

People try to sound important.Professional.Sophisticated.

They stuff their copy with complex words and stiff sentences, hoping the reader thinks:

“Wow… I barely understand this. He must be really smart.”

No.

That’s not authority. That’s insecurity.

And readers can feel it instantly.

How to Fix This in 2 Seconds

Read your writing out loud.

That’s it.

Writing an article? Read it out loud.

Writing short-form content? Read it out loud.

Writing a story or sales page? Read it out loud.

You’ll immediately hear:

  • where it sounds boring

  • where it feels empty

  • where it feels forced or unnatural

Those are the parts killing your writing.

What Great Writers Actually Do

Great writers don’t magically write perfect drafts.

They:

  • Pretend they’re explaining the idea to a friend.

  • Listen for flow, clarity, and tone.

  • Cut anything that sounds fake or awkward..

That’s the difference.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this alone can improve your writing by 90%+.

I guarantee it.
