Why nobody sticks around to read

I run through the house
My feet pounding the floor,
Breath coming in desperate gasps.
It feels like the end is near.
I'm going to die very soon.
This is the last time I'll feel alive.
Suddenly, hurried steps echo behind me,
And then..... The bell rings.
I snap back to reality. I'm in class, a book open before me.
I try to focus. "Listen, listen, listen. This is important."
But my eyelids grow heavy,
tempting me back to my dream.
Let me ask you something.
Is this what you are doing to your readers?
Putting them to sleep…Then wondering why nobody finishes your emails, reads your posts, or remembers your stories?
You do not have a distribution problem.
You have a storytelling problem.
Here is how to fix it:
1. Use Heightened Emotion
No one logs onto the internet hoping to feel neutral.
Flat content gets ignored. Every time.
You need to make your reader feel something specific.
Fear.
Curiosity.
Tension.
Excitement.
Nostalgia.
Anything but “meh.”
Instead of easing into your point, pull them in immediately.
Start with a dramatic line.
Build momentum.
Keep them wondering what happens next.
Emotion is the hook that keeps their eyes on the page.
2. Master Setup and Suspense
Relatability might get a nod of recognition.
But suspense gets attention.
Think about your favorite shows or movies.
They do not open with a calm explanation.
They start with a moment that makes you lean forward.
Something is off. Something is about to happen. Something is at stake.
And they do not explain everything right away.
They reveal the story piece by piece, making you stay to connect the dots.
Do the same in your writing.
Do not show all your cards at once.
Hold information back,
Guide the reader forward with unanswered questions.
Curiosity is a powerful engine.
3. Add Conflict and Chaos
Perfect stories are forgettable.
We remember tension.
We remember turning points.
We remember moments where something shifts.
There has to be friction.
A mistake.
A disagreement.
A hard realization.
Something that disrupts the “normal.”
That moment of chaos is where transformation happens.
It is where your lesson becomes meaningful instead of preachy.
Pick a scene where something goes wrong or changes dramatically.
Then attach your insight to that moment.
That emotional spike is what makes the message stick.
4. Deliver a Resolution That Changes the Reader
Now comes the payoff.
After the tension, after the uncertainty, you have to land the plane.
What did this experience teach?
What should the reader now see differently?
What belief should shift?
Maybe you help them see themselves with more confidence.
Maybe you challenge a limiting belief.
Maybe you reconnect them to something they forgot about themselves.
A strong story does not just entertain.
It leaves the reader with a new perspective.
One practical tip:
Start with a simple idea or emotion you want your reader to walk away with, then reverse engineer the story to lead them there.
That is the formula.
Emotion to hook them.
Suspense to pull them forward.
Conflict to make it meaningful.
Resolution to make it matter.
Use these four elements consistently, and your writing will not just be read.
It will be remembered.
