Every directory listing your business appears on is a data point Google checks against every other one. When they disagree — a changed phone number here, an old address there — Google's confidence in your business drops, and so does your Maps ranking. Here's what citations are, and how we fix them.
It doesn't need a link back to your website to count. Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, and dozens of smaller and industry-specific directories all hold a record of your business's NAP data — name, address, phone. Google treats agreement across these records as a trust signal, and disagreement as a red flag.
This is different from a backlink, which is a link from another site to yours and primarily affects organic (non-map) rankings. Citations primarily affect your Google Maps map pack position — which is why citation cleanup is usually one of the fastest-moving fixes in an audit, alongside Google Business Profile correction. In Ghaziabad specifically, where duplicate listings are common, the two fixes go hand in hand — a listing can't be trusted as the "real" one until its citation data agrees with itself everywhere else.

Check Your Citation Consistency — Free →Beyond Google Business Profile itself — which functions as both a directory and the ranking surface — the directories that carry the most weight for an Indian local business are the ones with genuine domain authority and real user traffic: Justdial and Sulekha as the dominant India-wide directories, IndiaMART for B2B-facing categories, plus category-specific directories relevant to your industry (legal directories for law firms, medical directories for clinics, and so on).
Volume for its own sake isn't the goal — a citation on a low-quality, rarely-crawled directory does little, and in some cases a business is better off with fewer, consistent, high-authority citations than dozens of scattered, half-correct ones. We prioritise correcting the directories Google actually weighs before expanding into smaller ones.
Find out which directories are hurting you — free audit →Automated citation tools catch obvious mismatches but routinely miss the subtler ones — a business name that's technically similar but not identical, or a directory that's changed its listing format since the last scan. I review the actual listings, not just a tool's summary of them, before deciding what needs fixing.
Citation cleanup is boring, detailed work — which is exactly why most businesses never get around to it themselves, and why it's consistently one of the highest-leverage fixes we make.
